Game Boy, HTC Aria and fake iPhone 4 combined for your amusement, is also possibly art

We're not sure what happened to Japanese tech mashup artist Goteking that inspired him to stuff an Android phone and a KIRF iPhone 4 into the back of a Game Boy Pocket, but stuff them he did, along with a bank of battery-powered LEDs that -- if we're not mistaken -- spell out a Tokyo train schedule. Perhaps it's designed to be a mind trip through and through, or perhaps it's a homage to the joint forces of nostalgia and geekdom that spark daily flame wars all around the world.Game Boy, HTC Aria and fake iPhone 4 combined for your amusement, is also possibly art originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 31 Dec 2010 06:31:00 EDT. Rumor: AT&T to announce the Motorola Olympus at CES

The unsourced rumor du jour is that Motorola and AT&T will be announcing the Motorola Olympus during CES next week. The long rumored 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor has been making its rounds on the web for the past few months now. And that's basically it, not much is known about the device. Judging by the few leaked photos, the phone looks like it will sport a screen larger than 3.7 inches. It's also worth mentioning that this is the first time we'll see Motorola bringing a high-end Android powered phone to another carrier outside of Verizon. Head into the Rumored Devices forum to see what others are chatting about. [via IntoMobile]Update: We've independently heard that the Olympus definitely is in testing on AT&T, with a 4-inch screen with 480x854 resolution.Rumor: AT&T to announce the Motorola Olympus at CES posted originally by Android CentralSponsored by Android Cases and Accessories

Three Words: find out what your friends really think about you

Three Words is a quick and painless way to find out both a) how popular you are, and b) how much your friends secretly despise you. It's basically a cut-down version of Formspring: you sign up, and then people can describe you in three words... and that's it.

By default your three words are submitted anonymously, which some people will like, but ultimately it will make the results mostly meaningless. Pages don't seem to have any kind of security, and there's nothing preventing you from spamming a page with multiple sets of words. Really, if it wasn't so easy to use -- if its "viralness" or virulence wasn't so high -- Three Words would be a bit... useless.

Still, it's fun enough to put your Three Words page up on Facebook or Twitter to see what your friends really think about you. Be prepared for some stupid and unsavory responses, though; anonymity can empower people to do some stupid things...Three Words: find out what your friends really think about you originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 31 Dec 2010 09:00:00 EST. Todo.ly is a to-do list manager for Chrome and the Web

To-do lists are pretty important for getting things done; and much like text editors, every person has their own favorite flavor, and it seems like every developer has a slightly different idea of what an ideal to-do manager would look like.
Todo.ly is one take on the do-do list manager. It also comes as a Chrome Web app, so if you use multiple synchronized Chrome browsers (or Chrome OS) and install the Web app, you instantly get the same to-do list manager across all of your machines. Just that may be reason enough to set it up.
In terms of functionality, Todo.ly is pretty much what you'd expect. It supports due-dates and filters (Inbox, Today, Next). It also lets you divide your work into projects, which may have sub-projects. A task can also have sub-tasks.
One area where Todo.ly is lacking is linguistic processing: If I enter "Do something tomorrow", it doesn't set the due date accordingly. It also doesn't support hash tags, which is too bad (at least for me - I love hash tags).
Todo.ly is not team-oriented at the moment: You can't assign tasks to other people, or receive tasks. I guess they're saving that one for a future paid version.Todo.ly is a to-do list manager for Chrome and the Web originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 10 Dec 2010 08:30:00 EST. LucidLogix virtualization tech enables AMD and NVIDIA GPUs to play together with Sandy Bridge

It's baaack. We've gone well over half a year without hearing a peep from black magic makers LucidLogix, but here on the doorstep of CES 2011, the company has resurfaced just in time to ride on the coattails of Intel's forthcoming Sandy Bridge platform. Sandy is expected to take over CES when companies start to introduce new PCs in just a few days, and thanks to Lucid's virtualization software, we wouldn't be surprised if a few are served with NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. This here technology enables the two to play nice, making the outlandish fantasy of using a multi-GPU, multi-vendor setup a reality. DirectX 11 is also supported, with the only real requirement being to "connect the display screen directly to the motherboard's Sandy Bridge display output." We'll be taking a closer look at the peacemaker once we land in Vegas, but for now, go ahead and prepare yourself for a beta version of 'Virtu' -- it'll hit at some point next month.Continue reading LucidLogix virtualization tech enables AMD and NVIDIA GPUs to play together with Sandy BridgeLucidLogix virtualization tech enables AMD and NVIDIA GPUs to play together with Sandy Bridge originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Dec 2010 08:59:00 EDT. 5 ways to recycle or revitalize your old computer

Christmas is coming, and you're about to have a ton of time off. Some of that time will be spent energetically tearing apart beautifully-wrapped gifts, and eating food is certainly next on the list of priorities. Obviously you have to play with your new gifts (or put on your new socks), but after that... after the postprandial sofa-surfing grunts and burps and farts... well, there isn't a whole lot you can do.

The other big thing about Christmas is the amount of waste it produces. Wrapping paper, cards, ribbons, the plastic packaging of the presents themselves... there's an awful lot of trash on Christmas Day. Then, of course, you need to throw out all of the things that have been replaced by new gifts: old kitchen appliances, clothes, televisions, printers and, most importantly, computers. A new laptop or desktop is incredibly cheap nowadays, which makes them very popular gifts.

But shouldn't we do something with the old stuff, rather than just throwing it out? Of course, you could Freecycle or wade into the Craigslist cesspit, or give your clothes to charity -- but hold onto those old computers! You'd be surprised with how many cool things you can do with an old desktop or laptop computer. You could finally learn how to use Linux, or set up a media center PC so that you can watch downloaded movies on your TV. You could create a locked-down box for your kids to surf the Web on, or a network-attached storage server for your backups. There's almost no end to the list of neat things you can do with an old PC!Continue reading 5 ways to recycle or revitalize your old computer5 ways to recycle or revitalize your old computer originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 24 Dec 2010 14:30:00 EST. YouTube Trends launches, now even easier to be virally hip

Have you ever wanted to be in at the beginning of a viral YouTube trend? Well, now's your chance, thanks to YouTube Trends.

There are two parts of Trends: a website (which is actually a rather fancy blog), and the Trends Dashboard. The website shows you currently-trending videos (it picks out four new videos at 4am and 4pm every day), and also offers more in-depth contextual analysis of the streaming video universe.

The Trends Dashboard is a totally different beast. It lets you see which videos are trending in a specific demographic, with the ability to sort by location (US state, or country), age group, and sex. Immediately, you can see that Lego Black Ops is very popular with those between 13 and 17, but that adults are currently digging the Metrodome Roof Collapse.

If that wasn't cool enough, you can do a side-by-side comparison of up to three different demographics. There are some shocking differences, even between the east and west coast of America; while the teenage girls of Atlanta are loving Bruno Mars, those in Los Angeles are into Justin Bieber. If you're into other cultures -- if you're a Japanophile, for example -- you could also use this tool to find videos that are right up your alley.YouTube Trends launches, now even easier to be virally hip originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 07:00:00 EST. Mozilla's P2PU 'School of Webcraft' gearing up for another semester of nerdy teaching

It turns out Barney isn't the only dinosaur interested in education -- Mozilla (with its own Dinosaur) is ramping up the course count in its online education program, delivered via P2PU. 'The School of Webcraft' is basically a free online learning community with structured courses about a range of Web-related subjects, from HTML5, through JavaScript, all the way to social media management and SEO. Each class is between six to ten weeks long, with the Mozilla-supported program offering 15 classes last term. This coming semester, they're upping their efforts and running a full 30 courses.

Each class is led by an actual human being, and participation is required -- it's not just a bunch of videos you have to watch. There's a limited number of places available per class, and you have to actually do homework. Not all classes are for beginners either; some are for advanced coders, too. But registration isn't available just yet - it begins Jan 8, and there's a mailing list you can join to be alerted when registration opens.

If you're serious about your Web-related education, we suggest you sign up for the mailing list -- these courses tend to fill up quite quickly. Head on over to the School of Webcraft site for more information.Mozilla's P2PU 'School of Webcraft' gearing up for another semester of nerdy teaching originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 20 Dec 2010 08:00:00 EST. Olympus XZ-1 and other pre-CES camera rumors from Sony and Panasonic

It's no secret that CES is the stage from which camera companies unleash more compact shooters than you can shake a tripod at -- and preceding those come a glut of rumors, naturally. 4/3 Rumors has heard Olympus will unveil the XZ-1 (pictured), which boasts the LX5's 10 megapixel sensor and a none-too-shabby 28-112mm f/1.8-2.5 lens. The site also heard that a few Panasonic model numbers that at this point really don't tell too grand a story: DMC-S1 and S3, DMC-TS3, FH2, and FH5. Meanwhile at Sony Alpha Rumors, the eponymous company will reportedly launch a number of compact cameras (go figure) including a Cybershot DSC-HX1 successor, some new Bloggies, and new 2D and 3D video recorders... and though no Alpha and no NEX models will be on the show floor, the site is also suggesting the future NEX-7 and Alpha A77 models have 1080p60 AVCHD and a 0.1-second autofocus. Latter tidbit notwithstanding, we'd wager by mid-January everything else here will be either confirmed or forgotten.Olympus XZ-1 and other pre-CES camera rumors from Sony and Panasonic originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Dec 2010 20:44:00 EDT. Let's Crate hands-on: simple drag-and-drop file sharing, but lacking important features

File sharing tools are all the rage. Ranging from the sync-oriented SugarSync, to the excellent workhorse of YouSendIt, and the consummate simplicity of Imgur, you have just about every base covered. It's a concentrated market with a lot of competition, but startup Let's Crate thinks it has what it takes to elbow its way into the money.

Espousing the KISS principle, Let's Crate hopes that the simple addition of drag-and-drop functionality and one crappy Flash flourish is enough to pull users away from tried-and-tested services. The Open Internet teaches net neutrality to everyone

I feel strongly about net neutrality -- and you may have some solid opinions about it, too. But what about your mother or your grandfather? Do they care enough about net neutrality to make a stand, or even understand what the fuss is all about?

The Open Internet is a nice little website that strives to explain the topic with very little text, and lovely vector graphics. It flows from top to bottom, with two main illustrations. The first illustration shows how things are today, with the ISP providing access to a raw "stream" of Internet goodness. The second one shows what things might be like if net neutrality is not guaranteed, with "special packages" offering "premium access" to email, Facebook, YouTube or other services many of us spend significant amounts of time browsing.

The site goes on to explain that ISPs would even be able to block access to certain services entirely so they could offer their own competing services -- a frightening scenario. All in all, it's a very quick and enlightening read and it sure beats having to explain the subject over and over again...The Open Internet teaches net neutrality to everyone originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 14:30:00 EST. App store milestones: Windows Phone 7 hits 5,000 as Android passes 200,000 available apps

Apps, apps, apps! Everywhere you look, more apps. Both Android and Windows Phone 7 have reportedly crossed a couple of round number milestones recently, giving us a decent idea of the maturity gap between the two. Microsoft's brand new OS with an old OS' name has rounded the 5,000 available apps corner -- that's according to two sources keeping track of what's on offer in the Marketplace -- while AndroLib's latest data indicates Android's crossed the 200,000 threshold when it comes to apps and games taken together. We're cautious on taking either of these numbers as hard truth, particularly since AndroLib was reporting 100,000 Android apps when there were only 70,000 -- but they do provide rough estimates as to where each platform is in terms of quantity, if not quality. Now, where do you think each will be this time in 2011?Continue reading App store milestones: Windows Phone 7 hits 5,000 as Android passes 200,000 available appsApp store milestones: Windows Phone 7 hits 5,000 as Android passes 200,000 available apps originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Dec 2010 15:04:00 EDT. Footage Of Android?s Revamped Music Player Leaks

Earlier this week, some folks over on the XDA developers forum got their hands on a leaked test build of a revamped Android music player. This evening the footage was spotted by Engadget, and now the word is spreading like wildfire: Android is going to get a default music player that isn't totally mediocre.

Alright, maybe I'm being a little harsh ?the music player that ships with the stock build of Android can play music just fine. But it's also underwhelming, especially whencomparedto the iPhone's much slicker music application. It's drab and there's nothing like Apple's Cover Flow ? but all that's changing.

McAfee?s 2011 Cyber Attack Targets: URL Shorteners, iPhones, Geolocation Services

Intel acquired McAfee has just released its forecast for the top targets for cyber criminals in 2011, and a number of popular platforms have made the list. The antivirus and security software company's labs group, McAfee Labs, says that Google?s Android, Apple?s iPhone, Foursquare, Google TV and the Mac OS X platform, are all expected to be targets in the New Year.

McAfee Labs says that URL-shortening services, which create more than 3,000 URLs per minute, will be a significant target for cyber criminals in 2011. Because social media sites are already riddles with cyber criminals, these links are going to be used for spam, scamming and other malicious purposes, says the company. Samsung Hub is reporting this morning that Samsung intends to introduce a new Galaxy Player to the tech gathering known as CES early next month. We've not been able to track down Samsung's official word on the matter, but the Hub's information details a 4-inch Super Clear LCD display with 800 x 480 resolution, Android 2.2 as the operating system (replete with Sammy's own TouchWiz layer, by the look of that screenshot above), a 1GHz CPU, 3.2 megapixel imager on the back plus a front-facing camera, and a 1200mAh battery. Android Market access is also in the cards, apparently, but when (or if?) this most worthy successor to the Galaxy Player 50 will make its US retail debut remains a mystery for now. Teach Parents Tech by Google helps you educate your folks

Teach Parents Tech is a new website by Google, that lets you send your mom, dad, or other older relatives short videos showing basic computer skills.
The site itself is very friendly-looking; not just the part your mom and dad see, but also the interface used for selecting the videos you'd like to send them. It's built like a form letter, with an opening that goes "I'm really shocked\impressed\worried\jazzed that you've started using your computer these days". You can then select any number of videos to send from five different categories, including The Basics, Media, Finding Information, etc.
The videos each appear to be around the 40-second mark, with most starting off with a different Google nerd in front of the camera, so there's a human touch. After a couple of seconds explaining what the video is going to show, it switches to screencast mode (which is as polished as can be expected from Google), and shows how to perform one simple operation.
Having looked at videos showing how to change your wallpaper on Windows, take a screenshot on a Mac and check your email on your Android phone, they all seem simple enough. An example has been embedded after the jump for your perusal, showing you just how easy it is to adjust the time on your clock on a Mac.
Quite a lovely resource - kudos, Google!Continue reading Teach Parents Tech by Google helps you educate your folksTeach Parents Tech by Google helps you educate your folks originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 03:15:00 EST. Adobe revels in first ever billion-dollar quarter

Adobe, the software giant behind the monstrously-successful Creative Suite, Reader and Flash, has just racked up its first billion-dollar quarter. Up from $757 million in the same period last year, this represents a 33% year-over-year revenue growth, which is pretty damn massive. Over the entire year, Adobe enjoyed a total revenue of $3.8 billion, up from $2.9 billion in 2009.

With all of the negative press over Flash, people often fail to realize just how big Adobe is. If you take a quick look at the Forbes 2010 list of the world's largest software companies, Adobe would place just outside the top 10, with revenues just behind Yahoo! and CA Technologies. This year's excellent performance, whether you like it or not, is almost certainly because of Flash's continued dominance -- and the excellent Creative Suite 5, of course!Adobe revels in first ever billion-dollar quarter originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 21 Dec 2010 06:38:00 EST. Tick! is a fun, simple timer for Android

A timer is one of those essential applications a phone must have; note that I'm not even saying "smartphone," but just about any phone, even the lowliest S60 Nokia phone, has a very usable timer accessible right from the 'main screen.'

There are a ton of timers available for Android, but most use the stock UI controls and emphasize features like multiple timers, saved presets, and others I don't really need. What I need is a fun, fast way to set up a timer and be able to move on. Tick! fits the bill quite perfectly.

The UI looks kind of like an old six-shooter cylinder. You just turn the big dial around, and the minutes on the slider increment. Once you dial in the duration you want to count down from, just hit the big green 'ON' button in the middle, and the timer starts counting down.

It's accurate down to a single minute. The only flaw I found is that, by default, it uses your phone's ringtone to alert you when the timer is up, so it sounds just like you're getting a phone call. Luckily, this can be changed. Quite a neat little free app, and as usual, you can find the QR code right after the jump.Continue reading Tick! is a fun, simple timer for AndroidTick! is a fun, simple timer for Android originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 24 Dec 2010 10:30:00 EST. T-Mobile 4G Mobile Hotspot shows up in FCC courtesy of ZTE

Remember those rumors earlier this week that T-Mobile was finally getting ready to launch a mobile hotspot or two? Seeing how Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint have all done it, it certainly makes sense -- especially with this newfangled 21Mbps HSPA+ network T-Mobile's got going on -- and sure enough, we've now got concrete evidence of a unit in the FCC's database. The MF61 from Chinese manufacturer ZTE is pretty clearly labeled "T-Mobile 4G Mobile Hotspot" inside... so yeah, there's your smoking gun. Confidentiality prevents us from seeing the user's manual or a photo of the thing, but from what little we can see, looks like we'll end up with a rounded unit not unlike the variant of the Novatel MiFi on AT&T and a number of European carriers. Really, though, doesn't matter what it looks like -- as long as it fits in a pocket and blasts high-speed data to a handful of WiFi connected devices of our choosing, that's all we need.T-Mobile 4G Mobile Hotspot shows up in FCC courtesy of ZTE originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Dec 2010 18:31:00 EDT. Firefox 4 Awesome Bar gets a bit of Googleesque 'Instant' magic

Muddying the waters with yet another 'Instant' product, and with only one letter differentiating it from one of Google's new features, Mozilla Labs has just launched the next step in the Prospector experiment: Instant Preview. Now, as you scroll through possible results in your Awesome Bar, the target page will begin to load. Instead of having to guess if it's the right page, you'll be able to glance down and check... instantly!

Mozilla Labs points out that you can also use it for 'temporal' information, such as weather and stocks news, or a Web comic. Type the first two letters of your favorite comic into the Awesome Bar, and the comic automatically loads. Read it, then simply press Esc and the Web page you were looking at before instantly re-appears.

Of course, you could use the same technique to check Download Squad regularly, too.

Just In Time To Pig Out For The Holidays, Foodspotting Beta Hits On Android

It was exactly one year ago today that Foodspotting sent out the first test build of their app to a few iPhone users. Today they're finally doing the same for Android ? and they're opening the beta up to everyone.

Yes, the application which allows you to take pictures of your favorite foods and share them with a community of foodies is finally moving beyond the iPhone. When we first wrote about the app last March, people were already asking for an Android version in the comments. But the small team had their hands full developing the iPhone version and working on their website. But this past August, when announcing their new round of seed funding, Foodspotting revealed that work had begun on the Android version. And now here it is.

Nanopore DNA sequencing technique promises entire genome in minutes or your money back

Those vaguely affordable DNA tests that promise to tell you just how likely you are to be stricken by some horrible and unavoidable genetic affliction in the future? They only look at a tiny fraction of the bits and bobs and bases that make up your genetic code. There's a race on to develop a quick and inexpensive way to sequence a human's entire genome, a process that costs about a million thousands of dollars now and takes ages but, via the technique under development at Imperial College London, could be done in a few minutes for a couple of bucks in 10 years. The process relies on nanopores, which are the go-to tech for companies trying to pull this off. Basically, a DNA strand is pushed through a 2nm hole on a silicon chip and, as it moves through, that chip is able to use an electrical charge to read the strand's coding sequence. That is then spit out to a supercomputer to crunch the numbers at a speed of 10 million bases per second and, within minutes, you too can have some hard data to make you freak out about the future -- and maybe a place to put your iPod, too.

Update: As many of you pointed out, there are multiple places to get your full genome scanned now for prices in the mere thousands of dollars. Pocket change, really.Nanopore DNA sequencing technique promises entire genome in minutes or your money back originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Dec 2010 08:08:00 EDT. Nokia E7 hits Amazon: pay $679 and they'll ship it when they've got it

You'll probably be waiting a few weeks at the very least -- but if you want to put in your order early, Amazon's US site is more than happy to take your name for Nokia's latest QWERTY monster. The E7 is running a stout $679 -- and that's not through a third party, that's Amazon's direct price for an official American version of the phone with a full manufacturer warranty. Feels pricey to us, but Amazon's pricing tends to fluctuate fairly regularly, so we wouldn't be at all surprised to see this fall a bit by the time the phone actually ships -- and if Espoo announces the rumored MeeGo-powered N9 by the time the E7's available, they might need to discount it a whole lot.

EOps Noisezero i+ Eco earbuds get cornstarch construction, finger-friendly design (video)

Hard to say when (or if) these beauts will ever hit the market, but we've all ideas they'd move quite briskly if positioned in a nondescript kind of store that tends to sell fruit, peripherals and things heavily prefixed with "i." Designed Michael Young has teamed up with EOps to create the Noisezero i+ Eco Edition earbuds, which are constructed with cornstarch (you know, in honor of Ma Earth), equipped with an iPod / iPhone-friendly inline remote and outfitted with a unique design that purportedly makes it easier for these to be inserted into one's ear canal. We're told that they'll eventually be available in charcoal, rustic brown, midnight blue and sage green, and yes, a carrying case would be included. Too bad there's nary a hint as to where you can actually buy 'em, but the video just below the break will give you a better idea of what to hunt for.Continue reading EOps Noisezero i+ Eco earbuds get cornstarch construction, finger-friendly design (video)EOps Noisezero i+ Eco earbuds get cornstarch construction, finger-friendly design (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Dec 2010 19:58:00 EDT. BenQ rumored to debut 10.1-inch R100 Android tablet in early 2011

Chances are that we'll find out for sure next month at CES, but PC World has it on authority that BenQ will be throwing its hat into the overcrowded Android tablet ring early next year. The so-called R100 will be a 10.1-inch device, complete with a 1024 x 600 resolution touchscreen, an unspecified flavor of Android and a Samsung-built ARM CPU humming along at 833MHz. Moreover, we're told that the battery will run for a solid 12 hours before begging for mercy (and calling it a night), and it can also be used with a stylus -- you know, for handling both simplified and traditional Chinese handwriting. 8GB of internal storage, an SD slot, mini-USB port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a mini-HDMI socket are also marked for inclusion, and of course, an 802.11b/g/n radio will be planted right alongside a Bluetooth module. There's no mention of a price just yet, and a company representative noted that images wouldn't be available until the device "was officially launched." Bah! Nokia N8 earns its fashion wings, fills in for DSLR on magazine cover shoot

There's really no higher compliment a cameraphone can receive than when a professional team of photographers is blown away by the results they're able to achieve when using it, so Nokia's N8 gets a well-earned tip of the hat for shooting the December / January cover of South African photography mag PiX. In the team's own words, "we wanted to show that it is not the hardware that makes a good photographer but rather the technical execution of an idea" -- very true, we think, but it obviously doesn't hurt when you know your way around Photoshop and you're using just about the best-equipped camera on the smartphone market today. Hands-on: Pinboard is a great Delicious alternative

So, Yahoo! went ahead and announced it doesn't like Delicious anymore. This is pretty much the dumbest move I've seen Yahoo! do in recent memory, and Delicious is going to fight for its survival outside of Yahoo!.

I really hope Delicious is going to make it, and I have every reason to believe it will. It's an incredible service, and one of the cornerstones of the Internet. Still, since I rely so heavily on Delicious, as soon as word got out about Yahoo! trying to kill it, I started looking for alternatives.

One of the most-hyped alternatives is called Pinboard, a paid service with an interesting pricing model: you pay a one-time fee determined by the current number of users * $0.001. This means the more users sign on, the more expensive it becomes. When I signed on a couple of days ago, the price was around $7. Now it's $8.65, and will probably keep rising.

Still, it's not a lot of money to pay for a safe home for all of my bookmarks, away from a big company that may make questionable decisions about a service critical to so many users.

But what did I get for my $7? I made a comprehensive gallery that you can see after the jump, and I'm going to walk you through it. Read on for the details!Continue reading Hands-on: Pinboard is a great Delicious alternativeHands-on: Pinboard is a great Delicious alternative originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 20 Dec 2010 10:00:00 EST. Season's Warnings helps you avoid being scammed online during the holidays

It's a bit more intense reading than Google's Teach Parents Tech series, but Season's Warnings from Trend Micro is definitely something your less-techy friends and family members should read. Trend's guide covers several important topics, like phishing, giveaway scams, and wireless security. While it's only a dozen pages long, there's still plenty of good information inside that will help your loved ones avoid scammy emails, websites which try to steal their login credentials, and misleading search engine results.

Season's Warnings also reminds you to carefully look over your bank statements. If you've been doing a lot of online purchasing and may have registered yourself for a free iPad or two, it's good idea to double-check your records to make sure everything appears as it should.

The Flash-powered pamphlet is bit awkward, however -- so it might be a good idea to print a copy (either on paper or to a PDF printer) to make it easier to read.Season's Warnings helps you avoid being scammed online during the holidays originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 09:30:00 EST. Metrodome is a metronome for Google Chrome

So the Chrome Web Store is upon us, and I decided to cover my first Web Store application for Download Squad. Rather than aiming for something high-profile like the Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online app, I decided to go with Metrodome!
Yes, it's just a humble metronome, but it's graceful. It comes with three different sound options (a "tick", a "beep" and a "tock"), all quite pleasant-sounding. But what I like best about it is that it shows a huge dot right in the middle of the window, that goes on and off to the beat. This makes it possible to play by eyesight rather than by listening to the metronome, so you can jam with your headphones connected to your amp and just watch the metronome on-screen.
You can set the BPM, of course, but only by clicking the up/down arrows. This means you're in for a lot of clicking if you want something drastically different than the default (120bpm). This is actually the only extra feature I wish this metronome had. Other than that, it's a beaut!Metrodome is a metronome for Google Chrome originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 14:00:00 EST. Google search now warns you of hacked and compromised sites

Emerging just a week after the high-profile Gawker Media hack, and proving it is still very fleet-footed indeed, Google search results now warn you if a website has been hacked. The notification (see screenshot above) looks just like the malware warning.

Unlike the malware warning, however, you do not get shown the ominous 'visiting this site may harm your computer!' interstitial page. Rather, you are free to click through to the site as usual. Perhaps Google's hack-detection code isn't quite finished, or it is still fine-tuning the process. The only actual change, then, is the addition of the "This site may be compromised" link, which links to a page in the Google Help Center.

The coolest bit, though, is for the owners of websites. If you register your site with Google Webmaster Tools, Google will automatically notify you if your site has been compromised. It?s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad App World

Editor's note: Contributor Jon Evans is an author and software engineer. He hails from the Great White North, but we let him write here anyway.

Report from the app-development trenches: it's gettin' kinda crazy out there. I've lost track of how many NDAs I've signed this year from people with app ideas. Old coworkers and previous clients have deluged me with so many offers of new work I can't possibly take it all. Friends of friends want my opinion on whether their app notion might fly, and if I might want to partner with them.

The VP at my client Xtreme Labs has as his Gmail status, ?I'm hiring 50 Agile Engineers.? That doesn't include their startup incubator Xtreme University. And this isn't frenetic Silicon Valley, this is once-sleepy Toronto. My clients HappyFunCorp, an incubator/development consultancy in Brooklyn, proclaim on their web site, ?We can only take on so much work, and because of that, there's no contact information on our page.? None of my developer friends are underemployed. Supply is low, demand is insane. I realize the plural of anecdote is not data, but I can't help thinking: this feels a lot like 1999.

Windows for ARM processors is coming; but is it 7, 8, or something else?

Microsoft is to announce a new version of Windows designed to run on ARM processors at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. It is not yet known whether this will simply be a port of Windows 7 to the ARM architecture, or an entirely new species of Windows OS.

ARM chips, due to their lower power consumption and smaller footprints, are used in almost every mobile phone and tablet on the market, including the iPad. With Windows Phone 7 (which runs on ARM chips) already making inroads into the smartphone market, Microsoft is now turning its eye to the tablet pie. An ARM build of Windows 7 would be nice, but surely too cumbersome for low-powered tablets.

To be honest, we have no idea what Microsoft will demonstrate at CES in January. A cut-down version of Windows 7 that can booted from firmware would be the most obvious candidate, but at the same time, it could easily be a tablet version of Windows Phone 7 (Windows CE). Either way, one thing's for sure: it will have to be awesome.Windows for ARM processors is coming; but is it 7, 8, or something else? originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 22 Dec 2010 06:30:00 EST. Freemake Video Converter adds Blu-Ray support, Web video downloading

Freemake's free Video Converter was already a very solid app, handling more than 200 import formats and able to output converted videos for playback on a wide array of devices. In the recently-released version 2.0, however, one major piece of missing functionality has been added.

Freemake 2 now supports Blu-Ray burning, allowing you to output dozens of hours of downloaded video to a single disc. If you don't have a Blu-Ray burner, no worries -- Freemake claims their media conversion kung-fu lets them cram 20 hours onto a single-layer DVD.

The upgrade doesn't stop there, however. Freemake 2 also adds the ability to download and convert videos directly from popular sharing sites like Facebook, YouTube, and Metacafe. Beyond sharing sites, Freemake can also grab video from Hulu, South Park Studios, The Daily Show, Megavideo, and several others -- including a good number of sites in the red light district. There's also a more full-featured preset editor, giving you advanced control over your default conversion settings.

The .Net 4.0 framework is required, but Freemake will install it for you if it's not already on your system.

Ziiiro Gravity and Mercury watches coming soon to a wrist near you

They're here, well, almost. Two attractive and legible alternatives to the over designed watch, Ziiiro's Gravity and Mercury, are now available for pre-order. No, they can't tell you if it's snowing out like Fossil's Connected, and they won't bump your 2010 year in review playlist like an iPod nano watch, but they do tell time like no other -- quite literally. The Gravity and Mercury have taken Ziiiro's lofty goal of stylish utilitarianism from concept to reality. The watches function without any of the markings of standard analog timepieces, instead using a continuously rotating combination of two rings to make temporal distinctions. The tip of the inner ring represents the hour, while the tip of the outer ring denotes minutes, and a fading gradient tracks the passage of time. Ziiiro doesn't let form override function, but it doesn't skimp on aesthetics, either: Mercury, which touts a stainless steel band, comes in four different color schemes, while Gravity boasts a patent pending bracelet strap (a silicone-metal combo), available in six colors. Both watches also feature pop-out faces, allowing for a variety of Swatch watch-style face-band pairings. However, while they're both readable and fashionable, these low frills watches don't come cheap: prices range from €100 to €143, or about $130 to $175.Ziiiro Gravity and Mercury watches coming soon to a wrist near you originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Dec 2010 18:19:00 EDT. Skype CEO Will Offer Users Credits For Outage; Does Not Rule Out Malicious Attack

Skype is still recovering from its massive outage yesterday, but it is getting back to normal. Instant messages still seem to have a delay (anecdotally, I am noticing that I hear the IM ping, but then it is hit or miss whether any message comes through), but voice calls are working fine. I know because I just spoke with CEO Tony Bates over Skype. He estimates that between 16 million and 17 million Skype users, or about 80 percent of the people who would be on the service right now, can use it. "We are bringing folks back on in a controlled manner," he says.

Bates priority is to get the service back up and running and to make sure Skype does not lose the trust of its users. To rectify that, he is publicly apologizing to them for the downtime and will offer users some sort of credits, with more details on that coming out later today. (Yes, free calls!) This is the right approach, and reminds me of what Netflix does when its streaming movie service goes down (free movies).

Cyberduck brings FTP, WebDAV, S3, and Google Docs transfers to Windows

Cyberduck has long been a favorite app of Mac owners, and with good reason. The free, open source app is a powerful way to transfer files between your desktop and the cloud, supporting FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, Amazon S3, Google Docs, Windows Azure, and more. Now, Cyberduck has finally arrived on Windows.

The release of version 4.0 beta packs the same great features as the Mac version, including SCP, multiple encryption types and full-featured SSH support. Cyberduck can also remotely expand files that have been compressed using TAR or ZIP. If that's not enough, how about bookmark support, synchronization, transfer previews, a built-in file previewer, and Growl support? Want to edit a file in your Google Docs using Word on your laptop? Right click it in Cyberduck, open it with Word, save, close, and Cyberduck automatically uploads your changes.

Be prepared for a bit of a lengthy install, however. Cyberduck requires the .NET 4.0 Framework, and it also loads Bonjour during setup. Still, if you do a lot of work with files on a wide variety of remote servers, Cyberduck is an excellent application for managing your upload and download chores.

Even if you don't do a lot of cloud files transfers, it's almost worth installing Cyberduck so that you can pin the jolly little duck to your taskbar. Rubber ducky, you're the one... You make cloud uploads so much fun...

AirFlick allows streaming of arbitrary media, DVDs, even screencasting to the Apple TV (video)

If you've run out of things to do with your Apple TV and have been using it as a hockey puck now that the lakes are getting solid, you'd better go dig it out of the snowbank. Following up on her iOS AirPlay hacks, Erica Sadun has released an alpha version of a tool called AirFlick which enables the playback of any 'ol media files on an Apple TV. That's demonstrated in a video below. Things aren't perfect yet but already others are having a field day with the tool, the folks at TUAW figuring out how to not only stream whole DVDs to an Apple TV but their entire desktop image too by simply providing a VLC screen:// URL into the player. The quality looks a little iffy and, as you can see in the video below, it's not entirely error-free. But, if you have the smallest little bit of patience, it's sure worth a shot, eh?Continue reading AirFlick allows streaming of arbitrary media, DVDs, even screencasting to the Apple TV (video)AirFlick allows streaming of arbitrary media, DVDs, even screencasting to the Apple TV (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Dec 2010 07:52:00 EDT. LG Optimus 2X coming to T-Mobile USA by March?

When the Optimus 2X was announced a few days ago, North America was conspicuously left out of the nebulous launch plans mentioned in the press release -- but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not coming. RCR Wireless says it has it on "rather good authority" that LG's beastly Tegra 2-powered Android phone will in fact see a US launch, and that said launch will be on T-Mobile in late February (which would be right after MWC) or early March. Considering how aggressively T-Mobile has been pushing Android dating all the way back to the G1, we tend to believe it -- and between the dual-core processor, HSPA+, and the promise of a Gingerbread update in the works, this could easily hang with the HTC Mechas and Motorola Olympuses of the world (likely launching on Verizon and AT&T, respectively) over the next few months.LG Optimus 2X coming to T-Mobile USA by March? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Dec 2010 17:21:00 EDT. Get Returnil System Safe Pro for free

Windows Steady State is a great app -- but it's not going to be sticking around much longer and it doesn't work with 64-bit Windows. Returnil System Safe is a nice alternative which does support Windows x64, and while it's normally $40, you can score a one-year license free of charge right now.

Returnil offers virtualization-based protection of your system, as well as built-in malware protection. It's also got a handy system rollback feature that lets you recover individual files that were changed, or set the entire system back to the way it was at your chosen point in the past.

With virtual mode enabled, a quick reboot is all it takes to completely undo intrusions from pesky malicious software. It's a great way to keep your less-savvy friends from getting themselves in trouble online. Even if they do install Super Antivirus Pro 2011 Gold Plus and have bogus alerts popping up all over their screen, all they've got to do is shut down and start again to make it all go away.

Registration is required, so use a disposable email address if you've got qualms about giving out your primary one.
